Writer's picture: happiest in wellieshappiest in wellies

Updated: Apr 21, 2020

Today we made the most of our exercise hour out of the house and ventured to our local woods for a family walk. While the singing birds and continuous babbling of water from the stream soothed our souls we busied ourselves collecting flowers.

Daisies, daffodils, dandelions and even some cherry blossoms made their way into our basket, as well as a few leaves and sticks (of course).

Once back at home we got busy in the garden using all the things we’d gathered. We laid all the flowers and leaves on the table then sorted them into categories, using as many words as we could to describe the flowers (colour, size etc). I love these talking opportunities and my girl's observations never fail to blow me away. ‘This one’s my favourite Mummy.’ ‘I like this beauty one.’ ‘This flower is pink.’ ‘Look at this curly one.’ We spent ages on this bit, as my girl loves to talk (I wonder who she takes after!).

Then we made a picture by choosing our favourites and placing them on a piece of white paper folded in half, 'This is my bit and this is your bit Mummy'. Deciding what goes where requires a lot of creativity and I could see the cogs turning as she played around with different layouts.

This was as far as I was going to take this task, but after I watched my girl carry the picture across the garden and her sad face when all the flowers slid off onto the grass, I decided it was time for glue.

This time the focus was less on the layout and more on the precision with the glue stick. She loves this bit too and her concentration was plain to see.

The result is a very ‘beauty’ picture and a very happy little girl.

What art have you been doing this Spring?
